How to get residency in Spain
When you make the dream of living in sunny Spain come true, remember the formalities that let you make full use of the benefits the country offers its residents. Note that getting an N.I.E. number is not the same as getting residency: they are two different documents.
When do you need to get residency in Spain?
Anyone who plans to stay in Spain for more than 90 days must obtain Spanish residency.
What conditions must you meet?
Requirements may differ slightly by region, but in general they include:
- documents proving financial stability, for example an employment certificate or a statement of funds in a bank account,
- your passport and a copy of it,
- registration at a Spanish address (empadronamiento),
- two passport-style photos,
- form 790 (tasa 790), used to pay the fee for issuing the document,
- form EX18.
Can you get Spanish residency while in Poland?
No. Residency can only be obtained while in Spain, by going in person to a police station or to the Foreigners' Office (Oficina de Extranjería).
What are the benefits of residency in Spain?
- lower property taxes,
- the option to renew your driving licence in Spanish,
- the right to a local pensioner's card,
- the option to get a health card (Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual).
Requirements and procedures may change and vary between offices. Before applying, check them with the Oficina de Extranjería or a lawyer.
